Compostable Packaging Materials

Compostable packaging materials are materials that comply with the European Standard EN-13432. This standard assumes a degradation process for compostable plastics of up to 12 weeks at approximately 60°C. However, Dutch composting facilities operate with a shorter composting process. According to Food and Biobased Research of Wageningen University & Research (WUR), composting processes in facilities last about three weeks, while the Dutch Waste Management Association reports a period of two to four weeks.
